She’s Gone Country

July 21, 2011

When I tell people I’m a country fan they look kind of confused. I’m the quintessential ‘alternative’ kid. I wear black square frames, I have side bangs, I have tattoos & piercings. I listen to bands most people have never heard of and I create themed playlists. When I say some of my favourite musicians are Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffet and Kenny Chesney I get a blank stare. I’m a Canadian girl living in Vancouver and I’m a country fan. I have very minimal friends that enjoy it.
Country is (for the most part) feel good music. Listening to it (especially in the summer) puts a smile on my face and a skip to my step. When I was younger I use to absolutely hate it. HATE it. I’d cringe when people mentioned it. I jumped to conclusions. Most people say country music is about your dog, getting your stuff back and other stereotypical things that aren’t totally true. Yes, a lot of it is pretty corny.

That photo above sums up the Kenny Chesney concert last night. Walking out I fully expected to enter a sandy beach with a Corona in my right hand. I exited Rogers Arena to rain and wind. Thanks for transforming Vancouver into a beach last night, KC.

As I was saying, many people judge country music (I should know, I was one of them). Listen to the upbeat songs! A lot of them are about DRINKING! SUMMER! Boys and girls falling in love! That first kiss! Beaches! Mexico! All these fantastic things in life. Listening to songs like “Summertime” or “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem” send you to a place that makes you feel warm, fuzzy and GOOD. Give it a try.

I leave you with a list of fun country songs to shake your groove thang to (yes, I said groove thang)
