Halloween vs. Christmas

October 29, 2010

I’ve never been much of a Halloween person. Actually, that’s an outright lie. I do like Halloween, I just don’t like the hassle of it. I don’t see how spending over a hundred dollars on a costume you wear once is possible. I don’t see how having fireworks and firecrackers going off all night is enjoyable. I don’t see how people terrorizing cats is remotely entertaining. Also, what’s up with girls thinking they can be a complete whore without a blink of an eye.
I do like decorating for Halloween. I like carving pumpkins and looking at all the houses decked out in black & orange.
It’s a battle royal against Halloween & Christmas. In one corner, Halloween, a Americanized version of Mexico’s Day of the Dead and in the other a (now) sickeningly ‘politically’ correct Christmas (with all religion and importance sucked out of it) I won’t even get started on how I feel about not being ‘allowed’ to say “Merry Christmas”. Actually, come December I probably will. Do you know I actually got in trouble for saying “Merry Christmas” at work two years ago? I snapped at the manager at the time and said “I don’t believe in saying Happy Holidays, I’ll say whatever I damn well please.” On THAT note, I basically wish Halloween can come and go so I can start getting excited for Christmas. Here’s a small list of things I enjoy doing around Christmas time:

  • Making hot chocolate and/or apple cider
  • Enjoying a nice cold glass of eggnog
  • Walking around downtown & enjoying the window displays
  • Shopping for other people
  • Making Christmas cards / wrapping paper
  • Attending craft fairs
  • Christmas baking!
  • Seeing family & friends I haven’t seen in ions
  • Making my house look like Christmas puked all over the place
  • Building gingerbread houses
  • Cutting out snowflakes
  • Starbucks’ Christmas drinks (eggnog latte, gingerbread latte, peppermint mocha etc.)
  • Making those super long construction paper chains
  • Making (and re-making) Christmas wish lists
  • Listening to (and singing) Christmas music

I’m sure there are more things I like to do, but class is about to start. Did I mention I absolutely LOVE vintage Christmas ANYTHING?!
